Is gluttony still a sin? I think it is. Crap. I’ve been a huge pig lately, brought on by my sister-in-law and brother-in-law visiting.
In the week that they were here, they brought in doughnuts and cinnamon rolls for breakfast, took me out to lunch every day and took us all out to dinner every night. There were snacks in between, too, and 18-hour-long happy hours complete with Greek olives and cheese.
If it had a pecan crust, was in a pool of lemon butter sauce or was topped with whipped cream, I ate it last week.
Their visit is only my most recent excuse for being a – . . . I hesitate to say “pig” or “cow” because even barnyard animals stop eating occasionally. Over the past year, my excuses have been varied:
- I was fixin’ to get ready to move and the stress of it all drove me to develop a addiction to the combination of Fritos and mayonnaise, which I put on every sandwich, and ate sandwiches four times a day.
- I had just moved and was eating in restaurants 24-7 because I couldn’t find any bowls or serving spoons in my new kitchen.
- I finally found everything and decided a new house and a new kitchen was just what I needed to usher in the return of my nurturing motherliness and cooking mojo, which I had lost during moving stress. My new mojo’s theme was “Comfort Foods” so I feasted on scalloped potatoes and ham, chicken pot pie, and varied combinations of all the starches.
- School started and I stopped putting on a bathing suit so did not feel the need to worry about what my body looked like other than my wrists, hands, face and feet, and I even gained weight there.
- The Holidays arrived.
- January and February were really busy for me and who has time to cut up an apple or walk on the treadmill when you have 200 Facebook friends to keep track of?
- Easter came and Publix started putting the Cadbury eggs right up front. And once you’ve got a couple pounds of chocolate in your cart, it’s like a magnet for Cheez-Its, filets and Oreos. All healthy foods are repelled and fly back out.
So I just took my brother-in-law and sister-in-law to the airport and not a minute too soon. I was entering the danger zone of having to buy bigger mu-mus at the beach shop for this summer.
Worse, I was thinking I may not be able to do it all over again when they come back next time.
